Background checks in North Carolina

State reporting rules

Legal review required

A state-specific summary for North Carolina is being prepared and will be published after legal review. Until then, the federal FCRA baseline applies as the minimum standard.

FCRA baseline

The FCRA requires a standalone disclosure, written authorization and a two-step adverse action process. Non-conviction records older than seven years generally aren't reportable unless the position pays $75,000 or more.

Additional considerations

  • Home state of Valiant Background Checks.
  • Expunged records may not be disclosed (N.C.G.S. §15A-153).
